Following a Dream

Following a Dream

With the sponsorship of Bosch Home Appliances, Istanbul Modern launches a very special art education program to support gender equality. The program, which will last one year, is organized for young girls who wish to receive art education and enhance their talent and artistic perspectives.

The program is organized in collaboration with schools, local governments, and non-governmental organizations and conducted by academics, artists, curators, art historians, and museum experts. Young girls in the 9th grade and above can apply to the program with a teacher's reference.

The project will involve 40 students from different, mostly fine-arts-focused high schools in various districts of Istanbul and aims to introduce teenage girls to creative and courageous role models and artists. Within the scope of the program, the seminars and workshops to be held between October 2023 and June 2024 will help strengthen these teenagers’ artistic expression skills and enable them to enhance their creative and innovative perspectives.

The “Following a Dream” education project, inspired by women artists’ artworks in the museum’s collection, encourages and inspires teenage girls to discover their own creativity through the experiences and artworks of women artists.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Ebru Nalan Sülün and Assoc. Prof. Seda Yavuz, the program aims to introduce fundamental knowledge about art history to help them understand contemporary art. Examples of artworks by contemporary female artists will be explored to present methods of interpreting contemporary art to young participants.

Organized by art historian museum experts, exhibition tours provide our young participants the methods to analyze an artwork while getting them to know the museum’s collection.

The seminar program introduces young participants to various artists and inspires them with their professional experiences and development stories.

Workshops inspired by artworks in the museum’s collection invite young participants to understand and follow the artists’ production processes. Under the guidance of museum experts, young participants work with visuals, different techniques, or production methods, producing their own artworks by interpreting various artworks

Led by expert artists in specific fields, these classes aim to support the development of skills. Five separate classes are offered: painting, sculpture, music, performing arts, and video art.

Painting classes are led by artist Burcu Perçin; sculpture classes are led by artist Sibel Horada; performing arts classes are led by Prof. Tuğçe Tuna; music classes are led by jazz musician Asena Akan, and video art classes are led by artist Gül Ilgaz.

The “Following a Dream” education project is offered on Saturdays from 13.00 to 16.30, free of charge for the 40 teenage girls accepted into the program.
