Istanbul Modern Auditorium

Moderator: Melodi Gülbaba

Speakers: Sibel Horada, Ayça Telgeren

A series of talks will be held on the occasion of the exhibition "Always Here", which consists of works included in the collection with the support of the Women Artists Fund, established in 2016 as part of Istanbul Modern with the aim of supporting the work of women artists in Türkiye, increasing their recognition and strengthening the representation of women artists by adding new works to the museum's collection. The third event of the series will be a talk titled "Studies on Memory” moderated by the assistant curator of the exhibition, Melodi Gülbaba, with Sibel Horada and Ayça Telgeren, whose artworks are displayed in the exhibition. In the talk, the artists will discuss how they approach the concept of memory in their works from both a personal and social perspective, drawing on their artistic practices and the artworks in the exhibition.

Sibel Horada

Born in 1980 in Istanbul, Sibel Horada graduated in 2003 from the Department of Visual Art at Brown University. She then completed her MA in Art and Design at Yıldız Technical University. Sibel Horada’s work focuses on the history of the personal and the collective in both urban and natural contexts and calls into question memory, disappearance, and stories woven together in strange and coincidental ways. The artist believes that memory is more than a means of storing recollections; it also involves processes that enable production and transformation. Distilling textual and narrative content, the artist makes use of the possibilities offered by three-dimensional materials and monumentalizes her investigations into personal and collective memory in her poetic and poignant sculptural forms. Horada lives and works in Istanbul.

Sibel Horada’s recent solo exhibitions were held at Versus Art Project, Istanbul (2021); Depo, Istanbul (2019); Kunstverein Ludwigsburg, Ludwigsburg (2018) and Daire Sanat, Istanbul (2013 and 2012). Her works have been exhibited at Odunpazarı Modern Museum, Eskişehir (2023-2022); Kunsthaus Göttingen (2022); 5th Mardin Biennale (2022); Erimtan Archaeology and Arts Museum, Ankara (2021); Museum of Islamic and Near Eastern Cultures, Be’er Sheva (2019); Port Izmir 3 – International Triennial of Contemporary Art, Izmir (2014); MAK Museum, Vienna (2013); Kunstverein Hannover (2013); and Matadero Madrid (2013).

Ayça Telgeren

Born in 1975 in Gölcük, in the province of Kocaeli, Ayça Telgeren received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the Department of Painting at Mimar Sinan University. Telgeren uses diverse forms of expression, ranging from drawing to video, concrete sculptures and installations. Telgeren’s personal memory is a starting point to trace collective memory, working like an explorer, in the artist’s own words. A member of the artist collective HAH since 2017, Ayça Telgeren lives and works in Istanbul.

Telgeren’s recent solo exhibitions were held at Galerist, Istanbul (2020, 2015, 2013 and 2011); and she has participated in group exhibitions in institutions including Meşher, Istanbul (2022); Dirimart, Istanbul (2021); Barın Han, Istanbul (2021); Evliyagil Museum, Ankara (2020); Mixer, Istanbul (2020); British Council, Istanbul (2020); and Odunpazarı Modern Museum, Eskişehir (2019).

The event is free of charge.

The conversation will be held in Turkish.
