Spatial Reflections on the Changing Concept of Holiday: The Pursuit of Alternative Architecture in Tourism

April 5, 2013, Friday, 18.30 - 20.00

VitrA Contemporary Architecture Series, organized by VitrA and the Turkish Association of Architects in Private Practice (TSMD) in order to support memory making in contemporary architecture, focused on tourism in its second year. The project continued with a panel as a platform of discussion, after a book that presented 50 projects on contemporary buildings of tourism and recreation and an exhibition on the concept of holiday.

The panel Spatial Reflections on the Changing Concept of Holiday: The Pursuit of Alternative Architecture in Tourism took place on Friday April 5, 2013, at 18:30 at the Istanbul Modern Conference Room. Moderated by the Associate Dean of METU Faculty of Architecture Prof. Dr. Abdi Güzer, the panel featured architect Gökhan Avcıoğlu, writer Buket Uzuner, and chairman of the board for Öger Vural Öger.

Organized in collaboration with the Association of Tourism Writers and Journalists (TUYED), the panel centered on functionalizing tourism buildings as alternative environments for tourism and vacationing, instead of an infrastructure that serves holiday activities. Panelists also discussed how the value of touristic buildings are formed through the power to offer an alternative living experience, and how architects can prepare to design spaces for the expectations and tendencies of a new genre of tourists that refuses the ordinary.
