SORRY COMRADE (SORRY GENOSSE), 2022
Germany | DCP, Color, 90’| German
Director: Vera Brückner

Germany, 1970. Two students, Karl-Heinz and Hedi, fall in love at first sight and try to find a way to be together from beyond the Iron Curtain. Under the pressure of the DDR secret police, Karl-Heinz is unable to move to East Germany and eventually, Hedi is forced to leave the country. Her escape to Romania under the guise of a holiday trip goes awry in numerous ways. With its playful use of documentary codes, vibrant set design and music, re-enactments, and rich archival footage, the film is fast-paced and energetic. This wild love story transcends all kinds of barriers and offers both a bit of an escape drama and a warm, emotional crosssection from the history of divided, cold-war Germany, far removed from the "gray East, golden West" narrative.
