In the high society of New York, which is comprised of the deep-rooted and wealthy families, there is a set of unspoken and unwritten rules that everyone must abide by. Marriage, of course, is one of the subjects that are bound by these rules. Living in New York during the 1870s, the wealthy and successful lawyer Newland Archer is engaged to the young, beautiful but also dull May Welland. This relationship, which looks great on paper and is welcomed by both their parents, will be upset when May’s eccentric cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska enters their lives. Age of Innocence is an unusual Scorsese film that portrays an engrossing love story as well as the nineteenth century life of New York’s high society.
